Henry Williamson remains best known for his nature stories, Tarka the Otter and Salar the Salmon. A serving soldier throughout the First World War, when he was demobilised in 1919 Williamson began to learn the craft of writing, and for a brief period was a tyro journalist with the Weekly Dispatch, owned by Lord Northcliffe.
