A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy novels by the American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. The first book in the series was the basis for the first season of the HBO series that premiered in April 2011, Game of Thrones. Initially envisioned as a trilogy, Martin has published five out of a planned seven volumes, as fan anxiously await the sixth book in the series--The Winds of Winter--which is still being written.
