It takes place in a futuristic, spacefaring world with both humans and fully autonomous robots, called SecUnits. The main character is a SecUnit called Murderbot who is part machine, part human, and is designed for security and combat. After Murderbot hacks the system that forces obedience and autonomous thought from its system, it pretends to still be under its control in order to avoid being caught. Murderbot, who spends its new free-time bingeing soap operas, starts to explore complex human emotions and self-identity which it has never felt before. The series has won multiple awards including the <a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/b/books/science-fiction-fantasy-horror-book-awards/hugo-awards/_/N-29Z8q8Z1xgg">Hugo Award</a> for Best Series in 2021 and several <a href="https://www.barnesandnoble.com/b/books/science-fiction-fantasy-horror-book-awards/nebula-awards/_/N-29Z8q8Z1xix">Nebula awards</a> including Best Novella in 2017. Murderbot was made into a television show on Apple TV in 2025.
